Hytrin
Hytrin (terazosin) is an alpha blocker that relaxes the muscles in the blood vessels, resulting in lowered blood pressure. Hytrin is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Hytrin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important Information
You should not use Hytrin if you are allergic to terazosin, or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to another alpha blocker.
To make sure Hytrin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- liver or kidney disease;
- a heart rhythm disorder;
- low blood pressure;
- a blood disorder such as hemophilia; or
- if you are unable to urinate.
You may feel very dizzy when you first wake up. Be careful when standing or sitting up from a lying position. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Hytrin will affect you.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often. If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using Hytrin.
You should not stop using Hytrin suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Hytrin if you are allergic to terazosin, or if you have:
- ever had an allergic reaction to another alpha blocker.

Hytrin is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
It is not known whether terazosin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I take Hytrin?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.
Hytrin is usually taken once daily at bedtime. Follow your doctor's instructions.
You may feel very dizzy when you first wake up. Be careful when standing or sitting up from a lying position. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Hytrin will affect you.
Do not take more often than directed.
Call your doctor if you miss 2 or more doses in a row.
Overdose
If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.
Symptoms of an overdose of this drug can include:
- dizziness;
- drowsiness;
- fainting; or
- slow or irregular heartbeat.
What should I avoid while taking Hytrin?
Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Hytrin will affect you. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often.
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with terazosin and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Avoid the use of grapefruit products while taking Hytrin.
Hytrin side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- chest pain, pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;
- swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
- a seizure (convulsions);
- jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes);
- little or no urinating;
- confusion, hallucinations; or
- high potassium--nausea, slow or unusual heart rate, weakness, loss of movement.
Common Hytrin side effects may include:
- dizziness, drowsiness;
- stuffy nose, sore throat;
- headache; or
- tired feeling.

What other drugs will affect Hytrin?
Taking Hytrin with other drugs that make you light-headed can worsen this effect. Ask your doctor before taking a sleeping pill, narcotic pain medicine, muscle relaxer, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures.
Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:
- digoxin;
- lithium;
- metoprolol;
- phenyto
