Uroxatral

Uroxatral is a medication used to treat an enlarged prostate. It is a type of alpha blocker that works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. Uroxatral is available in generic form and as the brand-name drug Alfuzosin.

What is Uroxatral?

Uroxatral (alfuzosin) is an oral alpha-blocker that is used to treat an enlarged prostate. Altered blood flow to and from the prostate causes prostate enlargement. Uroxatral works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.

What are the possible side effects of Uroxatral?

The most common side effects of Uroxatral include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nasal congestion

Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

What is the most important information I should know about Uroxatral?

You should not take Uroxatral if you are allergic to alfuzosin, or if you have:

  • a history of low blood pressure;
  • a history of fainting; or
  • if you are also taking a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems.

Some people taking Uroxatral have had a sudden decrease in blood pressure, which can cause fainting. Call your doctor if you feel faint, dizzy, or light-headed.

Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Uroxatral. It may increase your risk of fainting.

Uroxatral is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

It is not known whether alfuzosin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

How should I take Uroxatral?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Take Uroxatral on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal.

Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, or open it.

If you cannot swallow a capsule whole, open it and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while taking Uroxatral.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

What should I avoid while taking Uroxatral?

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Your reactions could be impaired.

Grapefruit may interact with alfuzosin and lead to unwanted side effects. Avoid the use of grapefruit products while taking Uroxatral.
