Azithromycin, also known as Zithromax, is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. Azithromycin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, including bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases, and infections of the ear, throat, and sinuses. Azithromycin is also used to treat certain types of stomach ulcers. Azithromycin is in a class of drugs called macrolide antibiotics. Azithromycin works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.
Azithromycin is available in generic form. Generic azithromycin is covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but some pharmacy coupons or cash prices may be lower.

Azithromycin side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, and sudden dizziness (like you might pass out);
little or no urinating;
signs of liver problems--nausea, upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), tiredness, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
low levels of potassium in your blood--leg cramps, muscle weakness or limp feeling, uneven heart rate, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling; or
severe skin reaction--fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
Common side effects may include:
mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation;
stomach pain, upset stomach;
headache, tired feeling;
dizziness, spinning sensation;
sleep problems (insomnia);
ringing in your ears;
weight changes;
mild itching or skin rash; or
vaginal itching or discharge.
