Flomax (tamsulosin) is an alpha-blocker that relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. Flomax is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men and sometimes for the treatment of kidney stones. Flomax may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Important Information You should not use Flomax if you are allergic to tamsulosin. Before taking this medicine You should not use Flomax if you are allergic to tamsulosin. To make sure Flomax is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease; kidney disease; or a history of prostate cancer. Do not take Flomax with similar medications such as alfuzosin (Uroxatral), doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), silodosin (Rapaflo), or terazosin (Hytrin). Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially: a blood thinner--warfarin, Coumadin, Jantoven; insulin or oral diabetes medicine; heart rhythm medicine--amiodarone, quinidine, procainamide, disopyramide, sotalol, and others; medicine to treat high blood pressure or a prostate disorder--doxazosin, prazosin, terazosin; or urinary tract infection medicine--fosfomycin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin. This list is not complete. Other drugs may affect Flomax, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here. Taking Flomax may make you dizzy or lightheaded, or cause fainting. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or lightheaded. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Avoid standing for long periods of time or becoming overheated during exercise and in hot weather. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Dizziness and lightheadedness can increase the risk of falling. Tamsulosin can affect your pupils during cataract surgery. Tell your eye surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medicine. How should I take Flomax? Take Flomax exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Take this medicine with a full glass of water. You may take Flomax with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it. Flomax is usually taken once daily, approximately 30 minutes after a meal. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day. Do not take more Flomax than prescribed. An overdose of tamsulosin can cause severe dizziness, fainting, or sudden death. Call your doctor if you have severe dizziness or feel like you might pass out. If you take Flomax for a long period of time, your doctor may want to check your heart function. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. You should not stop using Flomax suddenly. Stopping suddenly may make your condition worse. What happens if I miss a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An overdose of tamsulosin can cause severe dizziness, fainting, or sudden death. What should I avoid while taking Flomax? Do not take Flomax with similar medications such as alfuzosin (Uroxatral), doxazosin (Cardura), prazosin (Minipress), silodosin (Rapaflo), or terazosin (Hytrin). Call your doctor at once if you have: a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out; swelling in your ankles or feet; sudden weight gain; shortness of breath; vision problems; eye pain or seeing halos around lights; chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats; or urinating less than usual or not at all. Common Flomax side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness; weakness; runny nose; or back pain. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
