Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is a tetracycline antibiotic, which means it works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Doxycycline is available in both generic and brand-name form, and is typically taken orally.

Doxycycline is a prescription antibiotic that comes as an oral capsule, delayed-release oral capsule, oral suspension (liquid), and oral tablet. It is usually taken once or twice a day, with or without food.
To treat Lyme disease, the usual adult dose is doxycycline 200 mg on the first day of treatment (100 mg every 12 hours) followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg once daily.
To treat anthrax, the usual adult dose is doxycycline 100 mg every 12 hours for 60 days.
To treat chlamydia, the usual adult dose is doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days.
To treat Rocky Mountain spotted fever, the usual adult dose is doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 7 days.
To treat typhus, the usual adult dose is doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 10 days.
Doxycycline can cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Upset stomach
* Loss of appetite
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
* Hives
* Difficulty breathing
* Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Doxycycline may cause serious side effects. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
* Fever
* Rash
* Joint pain
* Muscle pain
* Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Doxycycline may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
