Cardura is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is in a class of drugs called alpha blockers. Cardura relaxes your veins and arteries so that blood can more easily pass through them. It also relaxes the muscles in your prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.

Important Information
You should not use Cardura if you are allergic to doxazosin, or if you have:
a history of Long QT syndrome;
a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding;
liver disease;
kidney disease; or
if you are also taking ketoconazole (Nizoral).
To make sure Cardura is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
heart disease or a heart rhythm disorder;
a stroke;
low blood pressure;
a bleeding or blood clotting disorder;
asthma, bronchitis, emphysema;
glaucoma;
depression; or
if you are on dialysis.
Cardura is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
It is not known whether doxazosin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.
Cardura is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
How should I take Cardura?
Take Cardura exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.
Cardura is usually taken once daily, with or without food.
To treat high blood pressure, take this medicine as soon as you can, but only if you are able to urinate. If you cannot urinate, call your doctor.
To treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), take this medicine once daily in the morning or evening.
Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.
Cardura XL extended-release tablets are usually taken once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it.
Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while taking Cardura.
Cardura is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include diet, exercise, weight control, and other medications. Follow your doctor's instructions very closely.
If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medicine even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
