Avodart

Avodart (dutasteride) is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It works by lowering levels of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a major cause of prostate growth. Avodart is also used to treat symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate.

Avodart is available in generic form. Common side effects of Avodart include:

• decreased sex drive (libido)
• impotence (erectile dysfunction)
• breast tenderness or enlargement
• hives
• itching
• rash
• swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat
• difficulty swallowing
• hoarseness
• runny nose
• decreased ejaculate amount

Avodart may interact with other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, oral contraceptives, azole antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotics, barbiturates, seizure medications, rifampin, or St. John's wort. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Avodart should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Along with its needed effects, dutasteride may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking dutasteride:

Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin

bloating

bloody or black, tarry stools

bloody or cloudy urine

chest pain

chills

clay-colored stools

dark urine

decrease in frequency of urination

decrease in urine volume

difficult, burning, or painful urination

dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position

enlarged breasts

fruit-like breath odor

heartburn

indigestion

joint pain

large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs

loss of appetite

nausea

pain in the back, ribs, arms, or legs

pains in the stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back

pale skin

persistent feeling of being unwell

puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue

rash with flat lesions or small raised lesions on the skin

red skin lesions, often with a purple center

red, irritated eyes

severe or continuing stomach pain

sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth

stomach discomfort, upset, or pain

sweating

swelling of the testicles

tender, swollen glands in the neck

troubled breathing

tunnel vision

upper right abdominal or stomach pain

vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds

yellow eyes and skin
