Finpecia (finasteride) is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness. It is a type of drug called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which works by reducing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of male pattern baldness.
Finasteride was first approved for use in the United States in 1997 under the brand name Proscar. It was later approved for use as a treatment for male pattern baldness under the brand name Propecia in 1998.
