Finast (finasteride) is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that is a selective inhibitor of steroid Type II 5a-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into 5a-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the active androgen in the prostate gland. Finast inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT in the prostate gland, skin, and liver. In clinical trials, Finast has been shown to decrease serum DHT concentrations by 65% to 85%.
Finast is used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It is also used to treat male pattern hair loss in men.
Finast is available in tablet form and is usually taken once a day with or without food.
